Can Solar Run an Air Conditioner in Nigeria? Sizing 1HP and 1.5HP ACs

Soliqo · November 6, 2026

Yes, solar can run an air conditioner in Nigeria, but it is the single biggest load most homes ask for. One 1.5 HP AC running for 8 hours can use more energy than the rest of the house combined. Here is what it takes, with real numbers for a home in Uyo, Akwa Ibom.

How much power does an AC use?

AC type Running watts Starting watts
1 HP split, inverter About 750 About 1,000
1.5 HP split, inverter About 1,100 About 1,450
1 HP split, non-inverter About 950 About 2,400
1.5 HP split, non-inverter About 1,300 About 3,250
2 HP split, non-inverter About 1,800 About 4,500

These are typical values. Check the nameplate or datasheet of the actual unit.

Worked example: adding a 1.5 HP AC to a home

Take a three-bedroom home in Uyo that already uses 6,488 Wh a day for lights, fans, TV, fridge, laptops and Wi-Fi. That base load needs four 550 W panels and about 11 kWh of lithium storage on its own. See the panel and battery sizing guide for how we got there.

Now add one 1.5 HP AC running 8 hours a night. These figures use 4.2 peak sun hours, 90% efficiency for the charge controller, battery and inverter, a 48 V lithium bank at 80% depth of discharge, and one day of storage.

Without AC With inverter AC With non-inverter AC
Daily energy 6,488 Wh 15,288 Wh 16,888 Wh
Solar panels (550 W) 4 10 11
Lithium storage, 48 V About 11 kWh About 26 kWh About 29 kWh
Peak starting load 1,187 W 2,287 W 3,987 W
Suggested inverter 1.5 kVA 3.5 kVA 5 kVA

One AC more than doubles the system. The non-inverter AC also nearly doubles the starting surge, so it needs a bigger inverter even though its running power is only slightly higher.

How to make AC on solar affordable

  • Choose an inverter AC. It starts gently and uses less energy once the room is cool. On solar, it often pays for itself in a smaller inverter and battery bank.
  • Run it in the daytime when you can. Daytime cooling comes straight from the panels, not the batteries, and batteries are the expensive part.
  • Cut the night hours. Cool the bedroom before sleeping, then use a timer or sleep mode. Going from 8 to 4 night hours almost halves the AC’s battery storage.
  • Set it to 24 to 25 °C. Each degree lower makes the compressor work harder.
  • Keep the room sealed and shaded. Close windows and doors, and block direct sun on west-facing windows.
  • Be honest with the client. Show them the difference in panels, batteries and price with and without the AC, so the decision is theirs.
